misadventures

misadventures is a series of images that tells an absurd, unserious story. Three Calico Critters discover a “Wonderland” made of scraps and trinkets. As they explore, they meet new unfamiliar faces, get entranced by Wonderland’s splendor, and try to find a way back home. “The world is your oyster!”

While brainstorming and working on this project, I just wanted to have fun, experiment, and let my mind take me wherever it wanted during the process. Most of my projects so far have been more minimal and grounded, so I wanted to make something different. I focused on textures and color to visually tell the story of misadventures.

To create the world of misadventures, I used trinkets and little figures, plastic bags and scraps, tissue paper, ribbon, trash; basically anything I could use that was around. I find a lot of excitement in being resourceful and finding creative use for random items. By using trinkets and plastic and trash, I also wanted to bring themes of consumerism to the project’s silly nature. I arranged everything on my desk to create a makeshift “set”, then used my Sony Coolpix camera to take photos.

I wanted to incorporate graphic design, photography, and creative direction into this project because these are all creative fields I am interested in practicing. I find a lot of joy in crafting and telling stories through my art, and will definitely be continuing to create more.
